WHAT’S THIS ADVENTURE ABOUT?
This is a special small group (6 adventurers in 3 cabins) expedition through the stunning and wild Fiordland region in the very south of New Zealand, where few can visit. No roads, limited boats and the best skipper and crew to help you enjoy what will be a special life experience. We are targeting Doubtful Sound, Dusky Sound and Preservation Inlet. Nine days of cruising and we finish with a one hour helicopter flight! Wow what an adventure!
We are cruising on the beautifully appointed 78 foot 2018 built MV Strannik. Visit – https://strannikoceanvoyages.com – for more ship details. Strannik is a Russian word which translates as “Wanderer” or “Pilgrim”. A strannik is a person travelling in search of knowledge and wisdom. There is no better word, nor way to describe the vessel and this special expedition. Both are born out of a natural curiosity and love of the natural world, history and travel. Strannik is designed, equipped and ready to explore the world. It is in full New Zealand survey.
With 2 WPA professional photo guides, we guarantee you the best photographic help. We will mix landings exploring places that few have visited, with on board workshops and one-on-one photographic help.
This will be our 9th group to New Zealand’s beautiful South Island. Our tour is in the heart of one of this countries most photogenic locations, at a great time with snow capped peaks. This will offer you iconic NZ images that many travellers do not experience during the busier summer months.
We include 10 nights accommodation – world class photo tuition, plus all meals and activities as per itinerary. We limit the group size to 6 photographers, plus 2 WPA guides. This will offer you personalised assistance in the field!
We include all transport from Te Anau and return by helicopter as per itinerary. You need to make your way to Te Anau. Julia is happy to help.
Nothing delights the lens like striking contrasts of landscapes and nature, and the South Island of NZ serves these up in abundance — vibrant and wild landscapes and fantastic creative shoots.
PHOTO adventure …
In 2022, we invite you to photograph some of the best landscapes and nature locations in the world!
New Zealand – the expedition …
DAY 1 – TE ANAU
We suggest that you have arrived in Te Anau at least one day before today. This will help with time differences.
It is very important that you are at the 2pm meeting today. We start with a workshop to maximise your expedition photography interests and include dinner and accommodation.
Accommodation – Hotel – (D)
DAYs 2-9 – TE ANAU – ON EXPEDITION
We depart today to Doubtful Sound where we join the Strannik. Our days are spent exploring this Fiord and sailing into Dusky Sound and Preservation Inlet. These incredible fiords, carved by giant glaciers thousands of years ago, will offer you new images around every bend.
Importantly, we have designed an itinerary to limit rough seas and maximise time spent in the stunning calmer waters of the fiords.
Please note, we do not publish a day to day itinerary, except for first and the last days because this is a true expedition. Our expedition has clear goals and Darran, your tour leader, will work with the ship captain to maximise each day.
DAY 10 – FIORDLAND TO TE ANAU
It is sad to say goodbye to our new friends, but we have a final adventure to offer you. Imagine taking off in a wilderness location and enjoying a 1 hour helicopter flight for stunning aerial views (and of course photos) of Fiordland! Depending on weather conditions, the pilot will offer you a one hour scenic flight returning back to Te Anau. We include a final nights accommodation and dinner.
Accommodation – Hotel – (D)
DAY 11 – TE ANAU – Expedition Ends
The expedition ends. You can depart to suit your interests.
Breakfast and transfers are not included. Julia is happy to help.
Itinerary and price are subject to change.
LIFE ON BOARD
Strannik has an exceptionally well equipped galley with extensive storage and refrigeration and freezer capacity. We work hard at creating a family atmosphere on board. We provide complimentary beers/wines and soft drinks. Dining is family kitchen style and is enjoyed around our large saloon table. There is an extensive reference library that is relevant to the areas we are visiting and a large TV screen in the saloon allows us to share lectures, documentaries or movies.
In Māori legend, these Fiords were formed by Tu-te-raki-whanoa. Chanting a powerful karakia, or prayer he hacked at the towering rock walls with his adze and carved them from the earth. He reputedly started in the south working his way north to Milford Sound. He was inexperienced when he started, chopping repeatedly leaving many islands and inlets. His inexperience has created what is arguably one of the world’s finest and remotest cruising grounds. Join us on this expedition as we explore the many islands and inlets in the Southern Fiords.
History abounds, the pre European history is well documented and it comes alive through the many place names and legends that have been preserved. The logbooks and diaries of Capt James Cook and his crew open a window onto the earliest European history especially in Dusky Sound. There are relics from the early attempts to exploit the natural resources of the region, whaling stations, sawmills, goldmines and abandoned townships, they all have a story to tell. Conservation is a common theme in this area and we will see many exciting examples of this. This expedition is more than a journey, it is an experience, one that is best enjoyed with a small group of people in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
All cabins have a private bathroom with toilet and shower. Karluk and Endurance cabins have double lower berth and a top bunk. The top bunk is easy to access. Discovery and Resolution cabins are technically 3 berth cabins with two lower berths and one upper berth. These can be configured as twin cabin (2 lower berths) or alternatively it can be as a extra-large double bed for a couple.
