WHAT’S THIS ADVENTURE ABOUT?
Easter Island is one of the most isolated islands in the world and is photographed by few photographers. About 1200 years ago, a double-hulled canoe filled with seafarers from a distant culture landed on the island and called it home. Over the centuries that followed, a remarkable society developed in isolation.
For reasons still not fully clear to this day, they began carving giant statues out of volcanic rock. These statues “moai”, are some of the most incredible ancient relics and can be found in every form of production. From complete free standing moai, to partially carved moai that are still embedded in the rock.
The people of Easter Island called themselves the Rapa Nui. Science has learnt much about the enigma of Easter Island and has put to rest some of the more bizarre theories, but questions and controversies remain. We will explore the key sites and coastlines that will offer you unique landscape and creative images. This is a special ‘once in a life time’ adventure!
AND it is linked to our Eclipse 2020 adventure!

Day 1: Santiago – Easter Island
December 3
We transfer to Santiago Airport in the morning to board the flight to Easter Island. (This flight is not included.) Reception at the airport and transfer to our accommodation. How exciting, you are on the mythical Easter Island. We are based at our comfortable accommodation for the entire tour. We utilise a local guide this afternoon to help with history and myths. We drive to two key points of the island and shoot. This will help you get a good idea of the island layout. Visit Rano Kau and the Ceremonial Village of Orongo. Our local guide will tell you the legend of the birdman and its culture and show you the petroglyphs with images of Tanga Mau (bird man), Make Make (the god that created him) and Komari (fertility symbol). The precisely carved and fitted stone walls at Ahu Vinapu gives evidence to a voyage to the west by Inca king Tupac Yupanqui. Hotel – (D)
Days 2/3/4: Easter Island
December 4/5/6
We depart each day driving along the coast to locations like “Camino de los Moais” (Moais’ Trail) and hike up the Rano Raraku Volcano, with its crater lake, gigantic quarries of tuff, where the stone statues known as Moais were carved, and about 290 statues in different states of completion. We visit Ahu Tongariki, a restored “ahu” (platform) with 15 erected moais, and nearby petroglyphs. Te Pito Kura, and Anakena Beach. We will also target new locations with an aim to optimise the best Moai shoots. This is Darran’s third visit and he will…
Have we tempted you? The itinerary continues…
