DAY 4 – EVGEKINOT TO AMGUEMA
August 18
We travel 90km’s north on a dirt track to the even smaller village of Amguema, along one of Chukotka’s most scenically beautiful roads. This road was built entirely by gulag concentration camp prisoners. Along the way, we will see the remains of barracks in which the prisoners lived and will pass the point where the International Date Line crosses the Arctic Circle. Amguema, population 500, is where the real expedition begins. From here, the roads are rough and often not visible at all. We continue into the tundra in an all-terrain vehicle and head out to an encampment of nomadic Chukchi reindeer herders. These people live in reindeer-fur tents called yarangas and migrate with their herds on reindeer-drawn sledges.
Accommodation: Overnight at the nomad camp.
